Peace and Chaos

It’s Sunday morning in Dade County, Florida. I’m working on Engine 66 and so far, before noon, we’ve run on a woman suffering from delirium tremens due to alcohol withdrawal, a “male having a breakdown”, threatening to kill himself and his wife, and a sweet 93 year old lady born in 1921. So much for a quiet Sunday morning.

peace&chaosAs we waited for an ambulance to transport our 93 year old patient, she said to me, right out of the blue, “Things aren’t like they used to be.” No, I imagine not. Especially for her. Imagine all the change she has lived through in the last century: World War 1, World War 2, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Sexual Revolution, the Gulf War, 911, the Iraq War, Afghanistan . . . the list goes on and on and on. And it occurred to me that what the Buddha said 2500 years ago still seems very true today.

The world is, and has always been, full of chaos.

If we wait for the chaos to abate before we find peace, we will never find peace.

Peace lies within regardless of the chaos raging around us in the world.

We must seek it. Cultivate it. Be it.

So Meditate. Pray. Practice Yoga. Run. Breathe. Go Fishing. Or Diving. Hike the Appalachian Trail. Rest. Be with your family. Try Kindness.

Let’s do whatever we need to do in order to forge peace of mind and spirit. If we want the world to change, we must begin with ourselves.  Of course it’s not easy. If it were, everyone would do it. But we’re not everyone. Or are we?
